5 benefits men could enjoy from CoQ10

Lately, you’ve been constantly on the go—whether you’re reporting to the office or working from home, your career is your world. The results speak for themselves: you’re reaping the fruits of your hard work, but for you, there’s no victory sweeter than sharing these triumphs with your loved ones.

You do everything that you can to stay healthy and strong—not just for your family and peers, but also for yourself—but you know that you can’t do this on your own forever.

Introducing Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), a potent antioxidant that is more than just your cell’s sidekick in keeping you and your organs in top shape. In this article, we break down five amazing potential benefits CoQ10 can do for you.

  1. Powers your cells

Thanks to CoQ10, your cells can perform biological functions to keep you alive.CoQ10 is naturally found within the mitochondrion, a part of your cell that is heavily involved with energy production that keeps your organs, and you, functioning well and energized.

An article from the 3 Biotech journal says that CoQ10 has been used in adjunct therapy—medical intervention is done to support primary treatment—for diseases of the heart, muscles, and gums, to name a few. However, health experts are still conducting further studies to verify whether CoQ10 possesses effective therapeutic benefits.

Evidence suggests that CoQ10 may help individuals in exercise performance. According to a study published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition, acute CoQ10 supplementation of about 200 milligrams daily in adults led to improvements in their muscle CoQ10 concentrations and reductions in oxidative stress parameters. In addition, over time, the individuals had higher plasma CoQ10 concentrations and took longer to feel exhausted from exercise.

  2. Encourages brain health

CoQ10’s potent antioxidant properties may help boost the health of your brain cells, preserving key functions such as memory and cognition as well as allowing them to stay healthy in the long run.

Although more human clinical trials are needed to verify CoQ10’s reported benefits to the brain, existing studies are promising—according to the Frontiers in Aging Neuroscience journal, there may be positive associations between levels of antioxidants in the body and working memory capacity. CoQ10 is also claimed to fight mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative damage that may contribute to cognitive decline in aging populations.

  3. Helps care for your heart

According to research, CoQ10’s antioxidant properties have the potential to fight the oxidative stress that may contribute to the onset or progression of heart failure and aging. CoQ10 has also been used to help manage cardiovascular conditions.

Existing studies have shown that CoQ10 may help reduce the following:

    • Repeat heart attack risk” in heart failure patients
    • The severity of statin medication-induced muscle complaints (e.g. pain, soreness)
    • The conversion of cholesterol into plaque that can clog up major blood vessels

CoQ10 has also been reported to help manage statin-induced muscle complaints, such as pain, soreness, and discomfort.

  4. Improves fertility parameters

Due to CoQ10’s ability to combat oxidative damage, it is said to help improve semen parameters in men with idiopathic oligoasthenoteratozoospermia. Research from the Clinical and Experimental Reproductive Medicine journal shows that male subfertility patients who took CoQ10 supplements ranging from a dosage of 200 milligrams to 400 milligrams per day for three months exhibited significant improvements in sperm concentration, progressive motility, and total motility, as well as antioxidant status. The findings also note that the participants who took 400 milligrams showed greater improvements in semen parameters compared to those who consumed CoQ10 at a lower dosage.

  5. Reduces cancer recurrence risk

Although there have been no reports of CoQ10 being successfully used as a treatment for cancer, there is evidence suggesting that CoQ10 may help preserve the cellular structure, promote their health, and ensure their health and survival—which could reduce the risk of cancer recurrence.

In addition, according to the National Cancer Institute, patients diagnosed with certain cancers were found to have low levels of CoQ10 in their blood. CoQ10 has also shown the potential to activate the immune system’s response to health threats as well as protect the heart from the possible damaging effects of chemotherapy treatment.

IMPORTANT

While it is generally safe to consume CoQ10, it is still advised to consult with your healthcare provider before consuming the supplement—especially if you have any underlying medical conditions. Depending on your medical professional’s recommendations, you may need to follow specific dosage instructions or report any side effects experienced from CoQ10 intake.
