Your brain and the wonder twins, CoQ10 and tocotrienol

Want to boost your brainpower? These wonder twins, CoQ10 and tocotrienol, could be your next partners in health!

CoQ1o and tocotrienol: Your brain’s energizers

Regardless of age, the human body needs a constant supply of antioxidants, whose primary role is to protect your cells, organs, and tissues from damage, deterioration, and aging. Within your body, there are naturally-occurring molecules called free radicals—unstable atoms that induce oxidative stress—which contribute to the onset and progression of a host of illnesses.

Antioxidants respond to these free radicals by destroying them, acting as your active guardians against threats to health. CoQ10 and tocotrienol are common antioxidants that help your brain stay healthy because just like your heart, it has high energy requirements and is particularly susceptible to oxidative stress.

Although most antioxidants can be found in your body, their levels tend to decrease as you age, which can leave you at an increasingly bigger risk of health complications like chronic inflammation.

The good news is that CoQ10 and tocotrienol can be absorbed through diet and supplements! Replenish your body’s antioxidant reserves with CoQ10 and tocotrienol—this nutrient duo gives your brain the antioxidant protection it needs to function well. Read on to discover how.

Together, CoQ10 and tocotrienol could help:

  1. Protect against brain disorders

    1. According to a medical article published in the Atherosclerosis journal, CoQ10 was found to be potentially useful for the prevention, rather than as treatment, for dementia. The article also noted that serum CoQ10 levels may help predict the development of the disease rather than serve as its biomarker.
    2. Evidence suggests that due to its oxidative stress-fighting properties and contribution to cellular repair, tocotrienol may help inhibit the development and progression of Alzheimer’s disease in individuals.

  2. Boost or encourage brain health

    1. Research suggests that tocotrienol may have neuroprotective benefits. Tocotrienol is said to possess the potential to help protect individuals from ischemic stroke, a condition that occurs when a blood vessel in the brain is blocked by a clot, thereby cutting off blood supply or flow to the brain.
    2. Some research reveals that CoQ10 supplementation helped neurons maintain healthy growth and motility despite exposure to a certain neurotoxic agent.

  3. Manage migraine-type headaches

    1. The American Academy of Neurology says that CoQ10 may help prevent migraines, as it historically has been used as a preventive treatment for this condition. In a 3-month CoQ10 supplementation study, migraine patients were administered 100 milligrams of CoQ10 three times per day. 48% of participants from the supplement group reported a reduction in headache attacks by 50% during the study. Meanwhile, this effect was reported only in 14% of participants from the placebo group.

Clinical implications

While these and other existing studies do not verify that CoQ10 and tocotrienol co-supplementation will protect you from diseases or disorders of the brain, or treat neurological conditions, they point to the nutrients’ potential in helping individuals maintain good brain health. In addition, bear in mind that taking supplements alone will not guarantee optimal or disease-free health.

Nonetheless, CoQ10 and tocotrienol may still be consumed to supplement your efforts in staying healthy. Get the most out of CoQ10’s and tocotrienol’s potential benefits by making other healthy lifestyle choices such as maintaining a well-balanced diet, constant hydration, regular exercise, and adequate sleep—all of which contribute to your holistic health.

Recommended dosage

The typical recommended dosage for CoQ10 ranges from 30 milligrams to 90 milligrams per day, but it can also be as high as 200 milligrams to 300 milligrams per day. For tocotrienol, the dosage varies from 15 milligrams to 100 milligrams per day.

Note, however, that the dosages may still change depending on the health conditions you wish to manage. It is still highly recommended to consult with a health professional prior to CoQ10 and tocotrienol co-supplementation.

IMPORTANT: Avoid consuming more than 1,000 milligrams (or 1 gram) of CoQ10 daily—this may cause a host of unpleasant side effects such as diarrhea and vomiting. Furthermore, health experts advise against consuming beyond 1,000 milligrams of tocotrienol per day, as this may increase your risk of internal bleeding.
